Life Story Circle at The Well
Not everyone gets to tell their life story.
You do.
Welcome to the Life Story Circle.
We have all lived through so many things and been forever shaped and changed by the events in our lives. And yet, there are very few places where we get to tell and hear these stories. Not unless:
You’re in an AA meeting.
You’re working on your memoir.
Or it’s your funeral and someone else has composed a eulogy.
This is why I have created the Life Story Circle. It’s a safe and sacred place where you get to tell your entire life story, without interruptions or judgments, and experience the ripple effects of telling it.
THE UNEXPECTED BENEFITS OF LIFE-STORY CIRCLES
I believe in the power of being known and truly knowing another human. And even though it can be hard to put a finger on why these types of circles are so magical, we know that people who tell their story get to know themselves in a new way, walk away with more self esteem and resilience, and rediscover passions that might have been tucked away or kept secret.
And these benefits are not a blip on the radar. They are long lasting. Why?
Maybe it’s because our society is facing an identity crisis where people don’t know how to show up in the real world. Online we get to like, comment, and spy on each other, and it’s designed to mimic connection and interaction, and since we’re all doing it . . . it feels normal, even though it’s not. They say that 2026 is the year we return to being more analog. I believe this circle is part of that trend.
Maybe it’s because a lot of us came from families where we were taught a spoken or unspoken rule, ‘We don’t talk about that.’ So many topics were taboo or frowned upon. Telling those stories in a circle might make you ask, ‘Why did we never talk about this?’ That alone is valuable.
Maybe because it’s refreshingly healing to participate in something that has nothing to do with productivity, results, or set outcomes.
Maybe it’s because people are hungry for real connection - for handshakes and eye contact. For someone to hold the door for them, or offer them a place to sit next to them. People are lonely and it can be difficult to know where to start to find meaningful connections in your own community.
And maybe, just maybe . . . it’s because the Life Story Circles are refreshingly real. We don't follow curated and polished storylines. This is real life - not just the highlights or the low lights.
I could go on and on about this, but there is no doubt that this type of environment is such a powerful antidote to being at gatherings where every other sentence starts with, ‘According to Chat GPT. . . ‘ or where people ask you the tired old question, ‘So, what do you do?’
And before you run with the thought, ‘But who wants to hear my life story?’
. . . let me remind you that we are built for stories.
We watch strangers on Netflix. We read books about people we will never meet. We light up and feel so rejuvenated after hearing just one good anecdote. Imagine what listening to an entire life story will do for you. Not to mention, what it will feel like telling your own.
And then there is that joyful discovery that what you think of as ‘not that interesting’ will be exactly what someone else in the circle needs to hear.
Your story deserves to be heard, at least once.
Wouldn’t you agree?
HOW IT WILL ROLL OUT- FACTS AND NUMBERS
The dates are: March 19-April 23 (6 weeks)
Each circle is small. Four participants plus myself. Five in total.
We will have six sessions together.
Cost: $149 (about the price of a weekly movie ticket, popcorn and a drink) - If this feels prohibitive, please reach out to us at info@thewellmentalandspiritualcare.org and we will work to make it affordable.
During the first gathering I will share my life story, just so you all can ease into the circle and start thinking about how you want to tell yours. Let your ideas percolate. Before we leave, we will know who’s up next. No surprises!
For the next four gatherings we’ll listen to one of your life stories. There is only one story per gathering.
Our last gathering will be dedicated to reflections and sharing.
Each session is 2 hours long, including a quick bathroom break.
We will sit on sofas and chairs.
HOW IT WILL ROLL OUT- THE STORYTELLING ASPECT
As the storyteller:
You get to tell your story in a way that feels most natural to you.
You can start in the middle and jump around.
You might only remember snippets of your childhood, that’s totally fine too.
You might want to skip over some difficult parts, which no one will blame you for. No one will be forced to air their dirty laundry.
Perhaps you want to dwell longer with one episode or person, up to you.
If you want to bring notes or read it word for word, go for it.
If you want to bring props, great!
If you want to come unprepared and just speak from the heart, the floor is yours.
The bottom line is, you get to tell your life story your way.
As the listener:
You get to listen without thinking about how to reply or inventing clever comments.
You get to quiet the part of your mind that wants to jump in and ask questions.
You get to give someone your undivided attention.
You get to hear some really amazing stories, without sitting in front of a screen.
Here listening is almost like a meditation.
A gift.
This isn't participation when you have the stage and then disappear. Witnessing the storyteller is a powerful role you will play and part of your full experience.
Also. . .
You’ll be happy to know that there will be no fixing.
No crosstalk.
What happens in the Life Story Circle stays in the Life Story Circle.
I will facilitate and set the tone.
About The Facilitator
Hi, I'm Dee Dee and I’m so glad you’re here. I grew up camping in Yosemite each summer. One of my favorite parts of the day was when friends and family would gather around the campfire as the evening settled down. Inevitably people started sharing stories about their lives. It felt like sacred space as the stories shared included the comical, to the profound, to the heartbreaking or life changing. This is the vibe I’m bringing to this group.
I’m passionate about this work because I have witnessed what can happen in a person’s life when they see that they matter, and when they see that what they share about themselves matters, and has ripple effects in other people’s lives. It’s what I call magic. And why is it that when people go away on retreat they share things they would never share otherwise? It’s because people come with a more sacred intention.
But it’s not that the retreat intention or the subject matter is the most important thing here. YOU are the most important thing. You are what’s to be honored. You are what’s to be curious about.
As a licensed minister, I was passionate about the power of testimony so I invited people to stand up and share their experiences. It changed people’s lives.
When someone is telling their story, we all hear the same words, but somehow we notice different things. That noticing goes beyond human connections. It’s like the Divine–what is connected to all of us–communicates through and to us in a way that has nothing to do with words or the logical mind. It’s almost like when we come together in this way, what is waiting to be unlocked gets unlocked. What wants to be told gets told. What is there to discover gets discovered.
I like the fact that Jesus is considered to be one of the greatest teachers in history and he told stories about people because he knew that stories hold multiple layers of meaning and interpretation for the listener. It’s a 3-fold experience - connection with Self, Others and the Divine.
I am an experienced facilitator who is known for creating environments where people feel safe, respected, and heard. I genuinely value what every single person has gone through in their lives.
Welcome to the Life Story Circle!
SO. . WHAT ELSE?
Yes, there is more!
Here we have an opportunity to connect with each other after each gathering. You might just say thank you for sharing to the storyteller. You might just say wow! Or you might say, Could we go and have coffee? Unfoldment happens.
Also, people who have done this in the past have walked away with so many discoveries.
They were surprised that they became more comfortable with talking about themselves in general.
They were surprised that they could share their life story with strangers and it didn’t matter what the response was from others.
They were surprised by what they chose to share and what they ended up not sharing.
They were surprised that when they signed up for a second time, they didn’t feel the need to repeat some of the stories they did last time and found new things they wanted to share.
They were surprised that telling their story mattered - to them and to others.
They were surprised to discover that this group was less divisive than anything they had ever experienced before because respect for a person’s story was the foundation of the group.
There are also plenty of surprises in store for the listeners as well:
Some listeners have reported that they became less judgemental and they found different perspectives they wouldn’t have considered if presented outside this kind of gathering.
They also felt less separate and disconnected, as being in this group led to seeing each other as human beings, and they experienced the felt truth that we all have something in common.
It also surprised some of them how they could identify with someone vastly different from themselves.
Some even were surprised at the way the story was used by the Divine to spark something in them they never expected.
Ready to join us? Great! Life Story Circles are a beautiful fit for people who:
Love storytelling and love the idea of listening to and learning from others. It’s also perfect for people who find other people’s lived experiences more fascinating than fiction. These people get that your life story is too precious to disappear into thin air. They also understand that stories connect us on a deeper level, and they are hungry for that.
Life Story Circles are not such a great fit for people who prefer smalltalk, superficial anecdotes, and find the idea of listening to someone else talk about themselves absolutely horrific.
After you enroll you’ll get a welcome email with all the practical details. Can’t wait to meet you and listen to your story. Welcome!
Some Common Questions:
WHAT IF I CAN’T MAKE IT TO ALL THE GATHERINGS?
Ideally, you want to be there for all six sessions. Your participation is an important aspect of the circle experience. If there was ever a time to hire a babysitter, move things around, and clear the calendar, it’s for these six weeks. If you really want to participate but know you’ll miss a session or two, email me at deedee@thewellmentalandspiritualcare.org and we’ll take it from there.
WHAT IF I CAN’T SIT STILL FOR TWO HOURS?
Yes, we’ll gather from 6:30-8:30, but we're not sitting still that entire time. We will begin each gathering with a brief presencing exercise, there will be a bathroom break, and we’ll allow 15 minutes at the end for comments and questions, if the storyteller is open to it.
WHAT IF MY STORY TAKES LONGER THAN ONE SESSION?
This is a common question, so is, “What if I can’t talk for an entire session?’ To the first question the answer is: then you’ll be welcome to just sign up for the next circle! We can’t expand the evening and I will keep the time. To the second question the answer is: Even though we’ll meet for two hours, you won’t be expected to talk for more than 90 minutes. And if you speak less, we’ll just end earlier. If that is the case- that could be exactly what is meant to happen and people may use the time to connect with others in the group more organically.
EHM. . WHAT IS UNFOLDMENT?
Good question! Here you get to watch unfoldment happen in you and others by simply being seen, heard and valued, just as you are. . .but what does that mean? It’s one of those words that will make more sense after you’ve participated in one of these circles. It’s a felt experience, not so beneficial to explain. It’s the difference between describing sugar or tasting sugar yourself.
